You have to bring your own towels on the Camino – and since a towel is about the most massively useful thing a Camino peregrino can have, it had better be a good one!
Most household towels are made of soft fluffy cotton – comfy and highly absorbent, but hard to dry, and heavy when wet. Non-good for packing.
REI sells these cool microfiber towels that are super lightweight and quick-drying. They even come with little clasps so you can hang them in places without towel racks (i.e., many albergues) and on the outside of your pack for “hike-drying.” I got a “large” (36″ x 16.5″). I folded a standard-sized bath towel in the same way as the micro-fiber so you can see the size difference (which in this case is more in the thickness than in the surface area).
I did not go with the “Lite” version because it felt more like a car chamois than a towel, and I wasn’t sure how well it would absorb. I got the “Deluxe” rather than the regular multi towel because they were the same price and it had the word “Deluxe” in it – so it was obviously better!
It worked great. I got completely dried off after a shower and still had dry area on the towel to spare. Honestly, I could have just used a medium, but the large might better if I need to cover up or use it more than once in a day. I tossed it in a pile overnight and it was not bone dry in the morning, but of course hanging it up is the proper method.
This isn’t the most exciting post I have ever written, but little things like this can make a big difference when they are all you have for several weeks!
